Which zips do we replace?
Not every zip is the same. When you order we ask which type it is, so the tailor can prepare the right fastening.
Centre-front zip
The long zip down the front of a coat, cardigan or hoodie. The most common one, and usually the most work.
Pocket zip
A shorter zip in a trouser pocket, coat pocket or inside pocket. Smaller work, but it means opening up the lining precisely.
Double-separable zip
A centre-front zip with two sliders, so the coat can open from the bottom as well. Common on long coats and outdoor jackets.
Refitting an existing zip
Are the teeth still intact but has the tape come loose? Then we refit the existing zip instead of replacing it.
What does a zip replacement cost?
The price depends on the garment and on the kind of zip. A pocket zip in a pair of trousers is a different job from a long centre-front zip in a lined winter coat, so the rates below are listed per garment.

Why have a zip replaced?
A zip is usually the first thing to fail on a coat that still has years left in it. Replacing it costs a fraction of a new coat and keeps a garment out of the waste stream.
We work with Van Schoot Group, which has been restoring clothing for over 55 years. That experience shows in the choice of fastening: a zip too light for the fabric will simply fail again.
Frequently asked questions about zips
- Can every zip be replaced?
- Almost always. On very fine fabrics such as silk and lace the tailor first checks whether the fabric will carry the stitching. If that is doubtful, we get in touch before anything happens.
- How long does it take?
- The standard turnaround is seven to ten business days, counted from the moment your garment reaches us. In a hurry? Pick a faster turnaround when you order.
- I do not know which type of zip I have.
- That is not a problem. The order module asks about it with photos alongside, and you upload a photo of the garment yourself. Still unsure? Pick whichever comes closest.
